Tone generation is based on sampled waveforms and includes a built-in sampler. The keyboard module (KYBD) can be separated from the synth module and the only differences in the variations is the number and weighting of the keys.
The M3 was produced with 3 keyboard variations: The M3M61 (61 keys), M3M73 (73 keys), and the M3M88 (88 keys). It is the next generation of workstation after the Triton series. This is not made less confusing by the fact that the M3's synth module is referred to as the M3M. It should not be confused with the Korg M3R, which is a rackmount synth module from the late 1980's. It was followed by the Korg M50, which is a stripped-down lower-end version of the M3. It also includes the next generation of the Korg KARMA engine.
The M3 is a synthesizer workstation that is the successor to the Korg Triton and incorporates elements of the OASYS engine.
